8 CANCER CENTER CAMPAIGN REPORT meditation room Generously Supported by The William G. and Betty Verst Family Situated in a quiet corner off the atrium lobby with floor-to-ceiling views of the garden courtyard, the meditation space is a welcoming sanctuary where patients and families can reflect, pray or relax before or after treatments or appointments. The William G. and Betty Verst Family knows firsthand how important such resources can be to patients and their families. Their late father and Verst Group Logistics founder William G. Verst survived two bouts of melanoma before his passing from unrelated causes in 2016, while their brother Bill succumbed to the disease at just 49 years of age in 2005. “Bill was the one who always took care in the sun, wearing a hat, a long-sleeved shirt and sunscreen,” explained Paul Verst. “Yet he developed melanoma. Had we had the genetic testing in place then, who knows? Maybe life would be different. We can’t go back, but we can surely make a difference moving forward. We’re confident that the St. Elizabeth Cancer Center will save thousands of lives in the future.” Photo: {Standing} Jim Stadtmiller, Jim Schack, Lynne Shank, Garren Colvin, Paul Verst, Betty Verst, Cheryl Popham, Barb Verst, Doug Flora, MD and Bob Hoffer {Sitting} Milissa Schack and Carri Chandler
