Frequently Asked Questions about Obstetrics & Midwifery Care

Most women schedule their first prenatal visit around 8–10 weeks of pregnancy. If you know you have a high-risk condition, or think you might, your provider may want to see you sooner so we can give you the right support early on.

Both OB-GYNs and certified nurse-midwives provide prenatal, delivery and postpartum care. Many women choose based on the type of birth experience they want. OB-GYNs provide medical and surgical care, while midwives often focus on low-intervention, personalized support. Some women choose teams that offer both.

High-risk pregnancies may include gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, twins or more, or health issues before pregnancy. Call sooner if you experience headaches that don’t go away, swelling, bleeding or decreased fetal movement.

You can talk through pain-management options with your provider before delivery. It helps to understand what is available and what fits your birth preferences. Options may include natural comfort techniques, nitrous oxide, IV pain medication or an epidural.

Yes, many parents schedule a virtual tour or an in-person tour so they feel prepared. Seeing the space often brings peace of mind.

Postpartum care after delivery includes physical recovery, emotional wellbeing, incision checks if needed and breastfeeding support. Your provider may also screen for postpartum depression or anxiety. We can connect you with additional care if needed.

Most women have their first postpartum visit between two and six weeks after delivery, depending on birth type and recovery. Some women come sooner for emotional support, incision care or breastfeeding support.

Cramping, fatigue or mild bleeding can be part of early healing after delivery. Call us if bleeding increases, you develop a fever, have severe pain or your symptoms interfere with everyday life. Your team wants you to call — nothing is too small to bring up.

You can continue with wellness visits, menopause care and specialty services, such as pelvic floor therapy or urogynecology. Many women stay with the same team for years
