We know vegetarian diets can be incredibly healthy. This may be why some people think that by following a vegetarian diet, they will automatically lose weight. Perhaps this is because, on average, vegetarians tend to have a lower body mass index compared to non-vegetarians. However, it is the types and amounts of foods that you choose to eat, no matter what diet you adhere to, that ultimately leads to weight loss.
A vegetarian diet is defined as one that does not include meat, seafood and sometimes eggs or milk or products containing these foods. However, many foods are vegetarian that are not necessarily healthy or good for weight loss. Cookies, chips, French fries, soda ““ all these foods are vegetarian but are much higher in calories when compared to whole grains and unprocessed vegetables.
It is possible to lose weight following a vegetarian diet by paying close attention to which foods you are eating and how much. Here are a few tips on doing it right:
- Include lots of non-starchy vegetables
Broccoli, tomatoes and leafy greens like spinach, lettuce and kale, are packed with vitamins, minerals and fiber and are very low in calories. - Include adequate protein in your diet
Protein plays a big role in helping us feel satisfied after a meal. Some vegetarians continue to consume eggs and dairy, which are excellent sources of protein. For more strict vegetarians who do not consume eggs or dairy, plant-based proteins like beans, lentils, nuts and nut butters, quinoa, and soy are all fantastic choices. - Drink water
If you’re making healthy choices, vegetarian diets are high in fiber. Water will help your body process that fiber as well as keep you feeling full and hydrated. Don’t mistake hunger for thirst! - Pay attention to food preparation
Prepare or choose foods that are baked, grilled, steamed and broiled instead of breaded and fried. - Plan ahead
As with any weight management effort, plan out your meals and snacks so you do not end up ravenous at dinner time and start grabbing any food in reach, like cookies and chips.
Weight loss is possible following a vegetarian diet, as long as you are choosing the right foods. All it takes is a little planning.
