Kindness is something kids learn from observing; whether that’s watching their parents, watching their favorite cartoons or reading their favorite books.
Buzzfeed came up with a list of 13 children’s books to enjoy with your children. Each one encourages children to help, share or love. Here are our top 5:
- We All Sing with the Same Voice by J. Philip Miller and Sheppard M. Greene: This song book is complete with verses, a chorus and fun illustrations. The book takes you on a journey around the world celebrating differences and being friends despite those differences.
- Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts: This book features a young boy who wants a pair of shoes he can’t afford. He ends up buying a thrift store version that are too small for his feet, and when another kid can’t afford new shoes, he gives them up making both him and the other boy happy.
- Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Seuss: This book (and now movie) is about an elephant who can hear a community living on a speck of dust because of his big ears. He sticks up for the Whos even when everyone is making fun of him. This book encourages doing the right thing, despite what other people think.
- Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed by Emily Pearson, Fumi Kosaka: This book is all about passing it on and how one good deed can lead to another and another. One girl’s actions impacted the lives of total strangers for the better, teaching kids that their actions matter and can make a difference.
- The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein: This book, beloved by many, is about unconditional love and the balance (or, in the case of the tree, the imbalance) of giving and taking.
