Type 2 diabetes can be risky business. The good news is you have the ability to reduce some of the risks; the bad news is you can’t change some of the risks. So what’s a person to do?
The American Diabetes Association has developed a program called CheckUp America, which helps people learn how to lower their risk for Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
“There are many things ““ called risk factors ““ that affect your risk for Type 2 diabetes and heart disease,” CheckUp America reports. “It’s important to know risk for diabetes and heart disease. Understanding and managing your risk can help you prevent diabetes and heart disease and live a longer, better life.”
Type 2 diabetes risk factors:
- Age, race, gender and family history
- Poor eating
- Physical inactivity
- Unhealthy weight
- High blood pressure
- Unhealthy cholesterol
- Smoking
- High blood glucose (sugar)
- Gestational diabetes (diabetes during pregnancy)
