We’ve all heard people say they’re bad at math because they’re “so right-brained.” Or don’t have a creative bone in their body because the “left brain” rules. But, do you know what that really means?
Two brains in one?
Every person’s brain has two halves, known as hemispheres or the left brain and right brain. Each hemisphere is responsible for different information gathering and processing functions.
Usually the left brain is credited with analytical functions and the right brain has intuitive and creative functions. Everyone naturally gravitates to one or the other method of functioning, however, we have access to and use both sides of the brain without being aware of it.
Which brain are you?
While we all have a natural inclination for one side or the other, we can ““ and should ““ practice using the other side. This will initially feel awkward, but it becomes more familiar and comfortable with practice. Meditating or trying new experiences are both great ways to start.
Comparisons have been made between dominant thinking processes of Western and Eastern cultures. Western culture is considered to be left hemisphere dominant (strong in analytical and judgmental skills, weak in intuitive abilities), while Eastern cultures are considered right hemisphere dominant. Just as with people, there isn’t a “better” hemisphere ““ just one that each culture prefers.
Why does it matter?
Recognizing which side of the brain we are most naturally comfortable with, can help you:
- Select a job/career that fits our natural abilities
- Recognize which “brain muscles” you need to exercise to enhance you less inclined skills
- Realize potential relationship challenges by recognizing different styles of viewing and interacting with others
Significant ongoing research indicates brain function is much more complicated and less easily understood than explained above. Visit Healthy Headlines for all the latest updates.
