Full disclosure: I am a devoted McDee’s fan. I know it’s bad for me, so I don’t eat there every day, but it is my guilty pleasure food.
I know plenty of people who hate McDonald’s, and I can’t count the number of times I’ve heard how bad it is to eat under those golden arches. Every time I take a trip through the drive-thru, my friends’ scolding voices haunt me”
“You know there are zero nutrients in that cheeseburger.”
“Those fries are just filled with calories, fat and sodium.”
It’s all true. McDonald’s lays out the nutritional information on its website. So, where are you planning to go for lunch instead ““ Subway? Panera Bread?
Hold on just one minute. Buzzfeed has something to say about your favorite “healthy” spots. According to the video, several meals at these “healthy” restaurants contain comparable amounts of calories, fat and sodium as McDonald’s.
We’re not surprised by the nutrition information for meals that star fried chicken or bacon; we all know those ingredients hide lots of calories. But, one of my coworkers is still reeling that her beloved Panera Bread Mediterranean Veggie sandwich has more sodium than a Big Mac, which is much more surprising.
Of course, food prepared by you at home is going to be significantly healthier than any of the options presented in the video. It’s usually the best lunch choice you can make, nutritionally speaking.
But on those days when you didn’t have time to make a salad or forgot to buy yogurt, pay attention to the nutrition facts at your favorite restaurants. The number nine may be worse for you than a Big Mac ““ and every once in a while, a Big Mac isn’t as bad as you thought.
