Personalized Nurse Midwife Labor and Delivery Care
As a mom, there was little mystery or newness surrounding Markie’s second pregnancy. But because it would be her last, Markie wanted to cherish every moment and was looking for a personalized labor and delivery experience.
That’s why she followed the advice of several friends who delivered their babies at St. Elizabeth Family Birth Place, a birthing center with 33 private labor and delivery suites in Edgewood, Ky. She wanted a team that valued her individualized birth plan. It was also important that her delivery was safe and unforgettable — one where she could be fully present for the birth of her daughter, Ariah.
“I’d heard good things about St. Elizabeth. And my nurse midwife, Amanda Parker, CNM, DNP, delivers babies there, so I knew it was the place for me,” Markie says. “Everyone was so welcoming. I felt completely at ease and not shy about anything. My whole experience was beautiful.”
A Trusted Care Team Connection
Although Markie didn’t have the same jitters a first-time mom might have, she still appreciated her nurse midwife’s reassurance.
“I tell everyone how much I love Amanda,” she says. “Ariah is my last baby. But if I were to have more children, I’d want Amanda as my nurse midwife again.”
Amanda specializes in supporting women from pregnancy to postpartum care. She was by Markie’s side through roughly six hours of labor. She’s delivered nearly 900 babies during her career. Each one, including 6-pound-15-ounce Ariah, was a special and unique experience for her.
“It’s a profound feeling to be in the room when a baby is born, no matter how often you do it,” Amanda says. “I was so excited for Markie. The birth of Ariah was a wonderful day.”
A Personalized Approach to Labor and Delivery
Markie says her experience at the Family Birth Place was peaceful and seamless. Her care team anticipated every need. From start to finish, she felt supported and confident in their expertise.
Amanda credits this level of care to the team-based environment at St. Elizabeth.
“Our entire labor and delivery team is incredible,” she says. “Everyone provides great support, from nurses and midwives to support staff and food service workers. We all play a part to ensure each expectant mom receives patient-centered care in labor and delivery,” Amanda says.
Markie agrees.
“The team went beyond my expectations,” she says.
That consistent delivery of complete care extended long after Markie went home. Amanda says she was thrilled to follow up with Markie during her first postpartum checkup six weeks later.
“When you share that life-changing moment of a baby’s birth with someone, you feel connected to them forever,” she says.
Comprehensive, Compassionate Care for Moms and Babies
Markie says her care team helped her stay relaxed at every stage of labor and delivery.
“The staff was amazing,” she says. “Someone was always checking on me and Ariah to make sure we had everything we needed.”
Around-the-clock, personalized care during labor and delivery is just one part of the care new moms receive at the Family Birth Place. Babies who need extra attention and support receive specialized services in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
The Beyond Delivery program offers free education and lactation (breastfeeding) support from registered nurses and breastfeeding consultants before birth and during a baby’s first six months. Care teams also connect new parents to create a sense of community and camaraderie.
Through advanced technologies and a compassionate, team-based approach, St. Elizabeth ensures every mom has a healthy birthing experience and every newborn is ready to thrive.
