Yes, it’s possible to actually enjoy all parts of the holidays.
If you’re feeling stressed, pause and take a deep breath ““ we’re here to help! Whether you can use the advice this year or need to save it for 2015, we have seven tips to make sure you have a wonderful holiday season.
1. Be pro-active
Determine what is really important for you to do and what are optional tasks or commitments then prioritize. Let your family and friends know about the changes you plan to make and why. You may be surprised at the support you receive.
2. Simplify
You don’t have to put out every decoration accumulated throughout your lifetime. Decide what items you want to showcase this year and highlight them. They’ll be noticed and appreciated where they may have been lost in the mass of other decorations in past years.
3. Be smart about gift giving
Give one or two gifts that have special meaning rather than several gifts that are less meaningful, and may be forgotten soon after opening. Go for quality rather than quantity. And shop online to avoid the crowded malls. You can curl up in your pajamas with holiday music and hot chocolate, and shop in peace!
4. Revamp your holiday cards
Use an online program to create your cards and consider including a brief overview of the year as part of the card. Those of us raised in the era of personally written long notes in each card can actually survive this change ““ I did! If you’re feeling guilty, you can send a personal note at a later time in the year. I have a friend who sends her “Christmas” cards in July!
5. Celebrate later in the year
During the holidays we get more invitations than we do during the rest of the year. Plan to host your holiday gathering for a time of the year when people are in a slump and need something fun to look forward to ““ February is a great alternative month.
6. Pay attention to your alcohol intake
At such a stressful time of the year, it is tempting to justify extra alcohol consumption as a method for stress reduction.
7. Breathe deeply
…and laugh often ““ just because it feels good!
