As summer days give way to autumn breezes, walkers and runners throughout Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky have ample opportunity to step out, have fun and fight breast cancer.
On Saturday evening, September 24, walkers and runners can participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Greater Cincinnati on the Cincinnati Riverfront. The fun starts at 4 p.m., when registration and the expo open, and is followed by a kids fun run, the Celebration of Hope, a timed 5K for the speed demons, and a more leisurely walk for the rest of us.
On Saturday, October 22, the American Cancer Society will hold its 20th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in Greater Cincinnati. The three-mile walk from Yeatmans Cove located at 705 E. Pete Rose Way in Cincinnati, raises funds for breast cancer research, life-saving education, and critical patient services. Registration begins at 8 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. Last year, 18,000 walkers participated in the event, which raised $540,000 to combat breast cancer, according to event manager Hannah Wallace.
Both events are fun, family-friendly, and offer a chance to celebrate breast cancer survivors. More importantly, they’re great ways to raise money to fight a disease that will strike one out of every eight women at some point in their lives. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosis among women in the United States after skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among women (after lung cancer), according to the American Cancer Society.
Because of events like these, “we are able to invest in breast cancer research to help understand, prevent, find and treat the disease. We’re able to provide access to free information around the clock, and we’re able to help people take steps to reduce breast cancer or find it when it is most treatable,” says Wallace.
