We all want something. Even the most content among us have wondered what it would be like to get a raise, a promotion, a new project at work, more responsibility, etc.
According to Jane Herman, personal and business success coach, there are plenty of reasons you don’t “just ask for it.”
Number one? You don’t even know what you want. Sure, you may have some lofty idea – you want to be happy, rich, respected, etc. – but you don’t know the details that will get you there, which makes it hard to ask others to help you tie those loose ends. For example, if sitting somewhere different at work would make you happier, you shouldn’t go to your boss and tell him you’re unhappy. You should go to your boss and ask if you can switch work spaces with someone else.
Even if it seems difficult to figure out the details and muster the courage to ask for what you want, the benefits abound.
Learning to ask for what you want in a professional way is a life skill, says Herman. And figuring out what to ask will help you tune into yourself and what will make you happy ““ another healthy life skill.
