Winter can be hard on the skin. The air is drier, there’s usually more wind, and we’re often wearing clothes that are heavy and scratchy.
What can you do to protect your skin from the harsh elements of winter?
Dr. Holly Gunn, medical director of the Dermatology, Aesthetic and Laser Center at St. Elizabeth Physicians in Florence, tells us five ways we can help our skin weather the season:
1. Wear sunscreen (at least SPF 15).
Many of us don’t think we need to wear sunscreen in the winter, when we rarely catch glimpses of the sun, but we’re getting more sun exposure than we think, Gunn said.
“Riding around in your car, going in and out of buildings, or participating in outdoor sports still exposes you to harmful UV rays,” she said. “You need to be wearing sunscreen to not only prevent cancer but to also prevent premature aging.”
2. Moisturize.
During the winter, the air is drier, making it very important to moisturize, especially for those whose skin is prone to dryness no matter the season.
Gunn said many of the moisturizers on the market are helpful, so it’s important to choose which one is right for you based on your skin type.
3. Don’t over-exfoliate.
Exfoliating our skin is the winter can make it even drier, so only use a gentle exfoliator once a week, Gunn said.
4. Use a straw when drinking.
Our lips take a beating during the winter months. With the heat turned on and the wind picking up, the season can provide the perfect storm to dry out our lips, and any moisture that’s left sitting on our lips ““ from drinking or licking our lips ““ can lead to dehydration.
5. Wear soft fabrics.
Even though wool and close-fitting clothes can make us feel warm and cozy during the cold winter months, they often irritate our skin when the air is dry. That’s why wearing soft fabrics, like cotton or cashmere, and avoiding tight clothing bodes better for your skin.
Winter can be long. Make sure you give your skin what it needs to look healthy in the spring.
