“Chunking” is something we all do to help with memorization, organization or to-do lists. We memorize phone numbers by putting groups of numbers together. For example, 859-301-2570 is memorized like this: “859,” “301,” “2570”. It’s easier than memorizing it all together as “8593012570”. We organize our children’s clothes by size and season. And, we prefer to read a 500-page book with 20 chapters rather than two.
Chunk your chores
So, why not “chunk” your household chores and work projects? You can do this by tackling different tasks, one room at a time. Is the clutter in your garage about to explode? Consider organizing the workbench, then the lawn tools and lastly the storage boxes and crates. If you check off one item as you go, you are more likely to feel as if you’re making progress and can complete the next task with energy.
You can use the same approach with your desk at work or a big project. Clean one corner of your desk, then another and then organize your paperwork in clearly marked folders or binders. Make a plan of action for your project so you know what steps need to be taken and how long you have to complete them.
One reason to put off tasks is their perceived overwhelming size. To avoid procrastination and feel more productive, remember these simple tips to “chunk” your chores.
