We all know that one person who enjoys going to the gym or for a run in the early morning hours – while the rest of the world is happily sound asleep.
While that’s great for the people who can do it, for some of us, simply making it to work on time with a shower and clean clothes is an accomplishment in and of itself.
Should you really exercise before work?
For night owls, who constantly hear about the “magical wonders” of waking up early to exercise – a faster metabolism and better ability to focus – are we really doing ourselves a disservice by waiting until the evening to hit the gym?
It turns out, according to Fast Company, there are pros and cons to exercising at both times.
Morning folks aren’t exaggerating when they say they they have more energy in the morning. Their bodies and minds are able to put more into a workout in the morning, before the stresses of the day impact them physically and mentally.
The one caution for early birds: Stretch before you dive in to a workout. Your body needs time to recover after you sleep.
After work exercise
For the not-so-early risers, exercise is safer at night. Not only are you more alert and physically prepared, your body is prepared to handle high-impact exercises.
The one caution for the PM fitness buffs: Exercising closer to when you’re going to bed can disrupt your sleep patterns.
Instead of trying to force yourself into a certain routine, exercise whenever it fits your lifestyle and personality. You will be more inclined to keep your fitness schedule if you feel awake, alert and enthusiastic about it.
