Mid-morning crash. Afternoon slump. Mind-numbing all-nighter. Whenever your eyelids get heavy and a nap starts calling your name, make sure you are fueling yourself with the right foods to help you power through your energy crisis.
Here are three energizing food choices that provide stamina and help revitalize you when you need it most.
- Whole wheat toast and almond butter
This is my go-to breakfast, especially on busy mornings. The whole wheat toast provides healthy carbohydrates and fiber to get me going and keep me feeling full. I add a heaping tablespoon of almond butter for healthy fats and a protein boost, giving this breakfast energy staying power and, more importantly, delicious flavor.
- Hummus and vegetables
Hummus with vegetables is one of my favorite late-afternoon snacks. Hummus is made from garbanzo beans which are loaded with protein, fiber and iron, helping me power through the day. I use low-calorie, high-fiber vegetables, like grape tomatoes and bell pepper slices, as my “dippers” which give this snack extra vitamin C to help the body absorb and use the energizing iron from the hummus.
- Water
While it’s not exactly a food, water can be an instant pick-me-up. Being even just a little dehydrated can leave you feeling tired and sluggish. I like to add slices of lemons, cucumbers or strawberries to add flavor without the guilt. As an added energy bonus, the walk you take to the bathroom will get you up and moving.
