How much sugar do you eat? I’m not talking about soda or sugar-filled coffees or the candy that always seems to be hanging out in the office – do you have a clear picture of how much sugar you’re eating every day?
I decided to take a closer look. For the whole month of February, my husband and I made a pact – to abstain from sugar. We avoided processed sugar and reduced our natural sugar intake – and the results were stunning. It was easier to get up in the morning, I felt more energy throughout the day, my head felt clearer – and I lost ten pounds in two weeks.
The results weren’t the only shocking part – I was completely unaware of how much sugar I eat on a daily basis. From cheese and tortillas to pickles and mayo, I am constantly ingesting sugar.
I ran across this infographic from the American Council on Exercise after my little experiment, and it was a great reinforcement of the lesson I already learned. Pay special attention to the bottom of the graphic – it shows every word you’ll see on a nutrition label that actually means “sugar.”
Always check with your doctor before you make a radical diet change – you never know how it can impact medications or other treatment programs you’re currently on. Next time you see your primary care physician, ask about cutting out sugar – even just for a week or two. You’ll be surprised at how much better you’ll feel and how much sugar you’re eating every day.
