St. Elizabeth Healthcare has been recognized by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons as achieving the highest level of quality for heart bypass surgery and mitral valve repair and replacement. It has received distinguished three out of three star ratings for both heart bypass and mitral valve surgery, which is the highest level and places St. Elizabeth among the elite in the U.S. and Canada.
“This is an achievement akin to the Oscars,” said Cardiac Surgeon Mario Castillo-Sang, MD. “Only about 20% of programs achieve three stars in a single procedure, but to achieve three stars in both bypass and mitral valve is truly remarkable.”
“Our surgeons can be very proud of these ratings, but more importantly this is great news for patients,” said D.P. Suresh, MD, Executive Medical Director of the Florence Wormald Heart & Vascular Institute at St. Elizabeth. “Patients throughout the region can be confident that our outcomes are among the highest in the nation.”
The analysis of data covers a three-year period from June 2018 to June 2021. The STS star rating system is one of the most sophisticated and highly regarded overall measures of quality in health care, rating the benchmarked outcomes of cardiothoracic surgery programs in the United States and Canada. The star rating is calculated using a combination of quality measures for specific procedures performed by participants.
