Sinusitis
Updated: 2022-12-28
Overview
Sinusitis is a condition in which the spaces inside the nose, also known as sinuses, get inflamed and swollen. Short-lasting sinusitis is often caused by the common cold. Long-lasting sinusitis may be caused by an infection, growths in the sinuses or other conditions.
Symptoms
Symptoms often include:
- Blocked or stuffy nose that makes it hard to breathe.
- Pain, tenderness and swelling around eyes, cheeks, nose and forehead.
- Runny nose.
- Drainage down the back of the throat.
Treatments
Short-lasting sinusitis, also known as acute sinusitis, usually goes away on its own. Longer-lasting sinusitis, also known as chronic sinusitis, may be caused by an infection. Chronic sinusitis might need antibiotics. Symptom relief for both conditions might involve medicines and nasal sprays, with or without a prescription.
