A serious condition in which the body does not respond properly to an infection, causing the organs to work poorly.

Overview

Sepsis can happen with any type of infection. More-common causes of sepsis include infections of the lungs, urinary or digestive systems, bloodstream, sites where a catheter was placed, and wounds or burns.

Symptoms

Sepsis symptoms can include a change in mental status, fast and shallow breathing, sweating, feeling lightheaded, and shivering. The symptoms can vary and may appear differently in children than in adults.

Treatments

Sepsis treatment includes various medicines and hospital care. Surgery may be needed to remove sources of infection. Early treatment is key to lowering the risk of life-threatening health problems.
