Otitis media

Overview
A bacterium or virus usually causes otitis media. The infection usually starts with a cold, flu or allergy that causes stuffiness and swelling inside the nose, throat and ears. Some people are more likely to have ear infections.
Symptoms
Ear pain, draining of fluid from the ear and trouble hearing are some symptoms. Children might have a fever, not want to eat and be fussy.
Treatments
Most ear infections go away on their own within a week or two. Some might need antibiotics.
