Description

Pain on the inside or outside the hip, which can be caused by arthritis, injuries or other health problems.

Self-care

Put ice or frozen veggies wrapped in a towel on the hip. Take a warm bath. Try not to bend at the hip, put pressure on it or sleep on it. Take over-the-counter pain relievers.

When to seek immediate medical care

Seek emergency help if the hip:

  • Looks very different than usual.
  • Can't move or support weight.
  • Feels very painful.
  • Quickly swells up.
  • Is painful along with fever or chills.

When to make a doctor's appointment

See a health care provider if:

  • Self-care measures such as rest, ice and heat don't help.
