Heel spur

Updated: 2023-11-28

Description

A bony growth that forms around the heel bone and rarely causes pain.

Self-care

If the heel hurts, rest the affected foot. Wear roomy, comfortable shoes with a heel pad or cup. An arch support also may help. Take ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others) or acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) for pain.

When to make a doctor's appointment

See a healthcare professional if:

  • The heel hurts badly.
  • Pain gets worse over time or interferes with activities.
