Overview
Gangrene is the death of body tissue caused by an infection or lack of blood flow. The condition often affects toes, fingers and limbs, but it can affect muscles and organs. If germs that cause gangrene spread through the body, septic shock can occur.
Symptoms
Symptoms include changes in skin color, severe pain followed by numbness and foul-smelling fluid from the infected skin. Gangrene of the muscles and organs can cause fever and the general feeling of being sick.
Treatments
Gangrene requires urgent care. Treatment includes antibiotics and surgery to remove dead tissue and improve blood flow.
