Flatfeet

Updated: 2023-06-13

Description

A condition in which the entire sole of the foot touches the floor when standing.

Overview

Flatfeet, also known as flatfoot, is a common condition in which the arches on the inside of the feet flatten when pressure is put on them. Flatfeet can occur during childhood if the arches of the feet don't develop, after an injury, or from the wear and tear of aging.

Symptoms

Most people have no symptoms associated with flatfeet. But some people with flatfeet experience foot pain, particularly in the heel or arch area. Pain may worsen with activity. Swelling may occur along the inside of the ankle.

Treatments

For painful flatfeet, treatments include arch supports for shoes, structurally supportive shoes and stretching exercises. Physical therapy also may help to strengthen muscles and tendons and improve gait.
