Shared Governance & Professional Practice Model
Shared Governance
St. Elizabeth Healthcare demonstrates shared leadership which affords nurses at all levels professional involvement and autonomy. Shared governance gives nurses the means to participate in decision-making and problem solving that affect their practice, professional development, and work environment. The shared leadership structure is based on the councilor model with Unit Based Councils at the core. They are encircled by increasing levels of engagement at all levels of nursing with Division and System-wide councils representing nurses in all specialties. Final decision-making rests with Nursing Leadership in conjunction with clinical nurse representation.
Professional Practice Model
The St. Elizabeth Healthcare’s professional practice model, the Dynamic Caring Model, defines and guides autonomous nursing practice and patient care delivery in all settings and at all levels. This multidimensional model places the nurse/patient/family relationship at its core and merges holistic care, quality, and human compassion to support the paradigm. This model is derived from three nursing theories: Transpersonal Caring by Jean Watson, System Theory by Betty Neuman, and From Novice to Expert by Patricia Benner. Three components essential to nursing practice comprise the framework: evidence-based practice, innovation, and collaboration.
