Mazor X™ Technology
Back pain can be extremely uncomfortable. In most cases, treatments that don’t involve surgery can help. But sometimes, spine surgery is your best option. When it is, your spine’s intricate nature and structure make precision especially important. Mazor X™ technology provides that precision and helps our expert surgeons get the best results for you.
Greater Precision, Improved Outcomes
Mazor X™ is a robotic surgery system that helps your surgeon plan and perform spine surgery. It’s one of the most advanced spinal surgery tools available.
With Mazor X™ technology, surgery causes less trauma to tissue surrounding your spine than traditional surgery. It also may result in less pain and help you recover more quickly.
St. Elizabeth Healthcare and the Mayfield Brain & Spine surgeons were the first team the region to offer this innovative spine surgery tool.
How Mazor X™ Works
Mazor X™ is not a new surgery. Your surgeon completes the same procedure that was used before the technology was developed.
What’s different is the detailed guidance your surgeon receives. This guidance makes it possible to precisely position surgical instruments and spinal implants, such as screws and other hardware.
Before your surgery, 3D software helps your surgeon create the best plan for your operation based on your specific anatomy.
During surgery, a robotic arm helps place surgical instruments and screws where they need to be with the help of a 3D optical tracking camera. The surgeon then follows the created plan. Your surgeon leads your entire operation; the robotic arm provides additional accuracy.
We use Mazor X™ technology when minimally invasive spinal fusion surgery — a procedure that joins vertebrae together — is the best treatment for your back pain. Specifically, it may be helpful in the treatment of:
- Degenerative disk disease
- Herniated disk
- Scoliosis
- Spinal stenosis
- Vertebral fractures
Benefits of Mazor X™
Compared to traditional surgery, the enhanced precision and accuracy Mazor X provides may:
- Lead to fewer surgical complications
- Lessen your need for future back surgeries
- Minimize pain during and after your surgery
- Preserve more healthy tissue surrounding your spine
- Reduce radiation exposure from imaging used during traditional surgery
- Result in quicker improved back function
