Our nurse navigators steer you through the challenges of cancer treatment, enhancing your overall experience and providing personalized care every step of the way.

 

Your Nurse Navigator is here to make your journey more manageable every step of the way. Navigators assist you not only with your medical and psychosocial care, but with your supportive needs, as well.

At St. Elizabeth, your care will be a collaborative effort including your physicians, our team of healthcare providers, your caregivers, and your navigator, all dedicated to giving you the best possible treatment and experience.

Nurse Navigators are clinical oncology nursing professionals dedicated to helping you and your loved ones in the following ways:

  • Guiding you through the healthcare system, helping to ensure understanding of your diagnosis and treatment options.
  • Advocating with you and on your behalf.
  • Assisting you in connecting with vital resources to support your needs, such as Oncology Social Workers who can help with things like transportation needs you may have related to your diagnosis or treatment.
  • Helping connect you with financial resources related to your diagnosis and treatment.
  • Communicating and coordinating with your healthcare team, including your primary care provider.
  • Providing ongoing education related to your diagnosis and treatment.
  • Assisting with referrals to other members of your care team when needed, such as genetic counselors, dieticians, social workers, and rehabilitation professionals.
  • Embarking with you on a Survivorship journey, helping you and your loved ones live with and through a cancer diagnosis.

We are available to assist you Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.  If you need to contact someone after hours or on the weekend for an urgent need, contact your treating physician’s office to reach an after-hours provider. In the event of an emergency, you should seek care at your local emergency department, or call 911.

Meet Your Nurse Navigators

Julie Schuckmann, BSN, RN, CNOR

Julie Schuckmann attended University of Cincinnati College of Nursing where she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing. As an Oncology Nurse Navigator, Julie has had the privilege of supporting numerous individuals through their cancer journey. She began her career in direct patient care, cultivating a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those battling cancer. Transitioning into a role specializing in surgical care in the operating room, she pursued certification as a Certified Nurse in the Operating Room to enhance her skills and expertise.

Prior to joining St. Elizabeth, she also worked in a Surgical Oncology office, Pre-admission testing and later served as a Breast Health Nurse Navigator in Oncology and High-Risk Cancer Screening. With a strong foundation in direct patient care and surgical expertise, Julie brings a unique perspective to her role, ensuring that patients receive personalized support and advocacy at every step of their cancer journey. She is passionate about making a difference in the lives of those facing cancer and remains dedicated to ongoing education to stay informed about the latest advancements in oncology care.

Living on a small farm in Indiana, Julie not only empathizes with her patients but also shares a common bond with those who call Indiana home. Outside of work, she is passionate about caring for her many animals, exploring local history and moments spent with family, creating lasting memories together.

Autumn Conner, RN, BSN, OCN

Autumn’s oncology experience spans from chemotherapy, biotherapy, immunotherapy infusion, oncology telephone triage and clinical nurse navigator for Oncology. She holds her Oncology Nurse Certification. Her background is in general hematology/oncology. Autumn is passionate about the patient population she serves and is excited to provide vital oncology navigation services to patients within the St Elizabeth healthcare system and Northern Kentucky community.

Autumn is an avid long-distance runner and enjoys participating in half-marathon races throughout the country. In her downtime, she enjoys crafting, reading and spending time with her two children,
husband and two Shetland sheepdogs.

Jenny Coleman, BSN, RN, OCN

Jenny graduated from the University of Louisville in 2000 with a bachelor degree of Science in Nursing. She started on the inpatient oncology floor at Baptist East in Louisville until she moved to Northern Kentucky after getting married. She knew she wanted to continue in oncology and was hired at St. Elizabeth in later 2001 in the inpatient setting. She then transferred to the outpatient Cancer Center in 2003 and has developed her expertise in several disease areas such as neuro, gynecological, gastrointestinal, thoracic, and more recently breast oncology. She received her oncology certification in September 2020.

Jenny has a great love for each and every patient and family member that enters the Cancer Center. She continually strives to provide excellent care and help make the journey through diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship more bearable. In her spare time Jenny loves spending time with her husband, two children, and her dog and cat. She is a student leader to high school girls at her church.

Karen Burke, RN, BSN, OCN

Karen Burke attended Xavier University where she obtained her Bachelors in Nursing in 1994.She started her career as a registered nurse at Oncology/Hematology Care, where she had worked in
many capacities, both prior to and during nursing school. After graduation, she became an RN in the same outpatient oncology office for over 19 years, where she administered chemotherapy and later became a Nurse Navigator.

During that time, Karen also became a part-time employee at St. Elizabeth, doing occasional IV therapy home care visits. She has been fully employed by
St. Elizabeth for the past 4 years.

She has held her Oncology Certification for 23 years. Karen is currently working as an oncology Nurse Navigator.

Katie Barrett, RN, BSN, OCN

Katie attended Northern Kentucky University where she obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 2013. She started her nursing career at St. Elizabeth at that time, relocated, and then returned as a clinic nurse in medical oncology in October 2020. In her time away, she found her passion for oncology nursing, specifically in lung cancer, and became a Certified Oncology Nurse in 2018. Since becoming the thoracic nurse navigator at St. Elizabeth in 2021, she has helped create several pathways and standard practices to ensure that hose who are diagnosed with lung cancer begin treatment as quickly as possible.

Katie is passionate about the patient population she serves and is excited to provide vital oncology navigation services to patients within the St. Elizabeth Healthcare system and Northern Kentucky community. She is honored to be part of this care team and a partner in your cancer journey.

In her downtime, Katie enjoys drawing, reading, and spending time at home with her husband and two children.

Emily Winter, BSN, RN

Emily attended Saint Louis University’s School of Nursing where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 2018.She graduated with a minor in Interprofessional Education and a concentration in Family Centered Nursing Care. In 2024, she successfully completed an Integrative Oncology Nurse Navigation certification.

Prior to joining St. Elizabeth, she worked in the Bone Marrow Transplant floor at Cincinnati Children’s until she became an oncology travel nurse. She did travel assignments in Seattle, Washington, Billings Montana, and Charlotte North Caroline before deciding to take a permanent job closer to home.As a Nurse Navigator specializing in oncology, she brings a deep commitment to guiding patients and their families through the complexities of cancer care. With her background in oncology nursing, she has honed her skills in providing compassionate support and evidence-based care to individuals facing some of life’s most challenging moments. Her journey in healthcare has been driven by a passion for ensuring each patient receives personalized attention and comprehensive assistance throughout their treatment. She is dedicated to empowering patients with knowledge, fostering open communication, and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams to optimize outcomes and enhance quality of life. She has a huge passion for holistic health. Incorporating holistic remedies into oncology practice stems from a deep passion for treating the whole person, recognizing that true healing encompasses not just the physical, but the emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of health.She is eager to apply her knowledge and empathy to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those navigating the path of cancer treatment and suriviorship.

Outside of work, she loves spending time with her family and her dark red golden retriever, Walloon (Wally). She loves to spend time outside hiking, camping, and swimming. Each year, she makes it a goal to spend over 1,000 hours outside. She is currently working on becoming a Certified Yoga Nurse.

Stephanie Bonfilio, MSN, RN, OCN, ONN-CG

Stephanie Bonfilio currently works as the Oncology Navigation Manager at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Edgewood, KY. Since graduating with her BSN from the University of Louisville in 2008, she has spent her entire nursing career in the field of oncology, with most of this time spent in outpatient oncology in the roles of Infusion Nurse, Nurse Navigator, Clinical Education Specialist, and most recently her role building and managing the Oncology Patient Navigation program. Stephanie went on to graduate with her MSN in Nursing Education in 2017 from Northern Kentucky University.

She is a member of ONS nationally and is active in the local Cincinnati Tri-state Chapter where she holds the position of Directorat Large and was elected to President-Elect in 2024. She is a member of the Kentucky Oncology Navigator Network, and AONN+ where she participates nationally on the metrics committee as well as a subcommittee focusing on EMR Frameworks and Dashboards for navigation.

She is an active member of ACCC, serving on the ACCC Education Committee and the Institute for Comprehensive Cancer Care Services committee. Stephanie authored an article titled: Developing a Disease-Site Specific Oncology Patient Navigation Program that was published in Oncology Issues, has presented multiple posters at AONN+ and ONS Congress, and was part of speaker panels at the AONN+ Mid-Year and AONN+ Annual Conferences in 2023, discussing aspects of navigation metrics.

In 2023, Stephanie was a Cincinnati Business Courier Healthcare Hero finalist in the Patient Experience category and also received an award for Navigation Excellence through AONN+. Stephanie is a huge advocate for focusing on processes that put the patient first and utilizing quality driven metrics to improve patients’ experiences and outcomes.
