Intrauterine growth restriction

Updated: 2024-02-28

Description

A condition in which a baby does not reach the expected weight range during pregnancy.

Overview

Causes of intrauterine growth restriction, also called fetal growth restriction, vary. Causes include medical conditions of the pregnant person, infections, smoking and alcohol use. Other causes are issues with the placenta or the baby or there being more than one fetus.

Symptoms

With this condition, a baby is born weighing less than 90% of other babies at the same gestational age.

Treatments

Ultrasounds during pregnancy help watch a baby's growth. Depending on the results, the baby may need to be delivered early.
