Hyperthermia
A dangerously overheated body, usually in response to prolonged hot, humid weather.
Overview
Hyperthermia happens when the body's heat-regulating mechanisms don't work effectively. Older age, some illnesses and some medicines increase the risk of developing hyperthermia.
Symptoms
A temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius) or higher is life-threatening. Confusion, nausea or vomiting, and rapid breathing are some symptoms.
Treatments
Take action right away to cool the person with hyperthermia while getting emergency help.
- Get the person into shade or indoors.
- Remove excess clothing.
- Cool the person with whatever means available, such as a cool tub of water or shower, cold, wet towels, or ice packs.
