Dermatitis herpetiformis

Updated: 2025-01-24

Description

A very itchy skin rash made up of bumps and blisters.

Overview

Dermatitis herpetiformis is an off-and-on itchy skin rash made up of small blisters and bumps.

Gluten intolerance can cause this blistery skin disease. Genetics and conditions in which the immune system attacks healthy cells, called autoimmune conditions, may play a role.

Symptoms

The rash usually appears on the elbows, knees, torso, scalp or buttocks. The face and groin also can be involved. A burning sensation may be felt before the rash appears.

Treatments

Antibiotics and a gluten-free diet are treatments.
