We have an opportunity to do something no one has ever done in this region by building this Heart and Vascular Institute to take care of our own people. Our goal is to have state-of-the-art facilities and programs to continually develop and ensure that we give people the opportunity to live longer and have a better quality of life.

Heart & Vascular Institute Campaign

Some of the numbers related to the overall health of our region are shocking — specifically as they relate to our hearts. In 2013, America's Health Rankings recognized Kentucky as the:

  • 4th worst state for cardiovascular disease.
  • 3rd worst state for heart attacks.
  • 8th worst state for high cholesterol.

This means our husbands, wives, mothers, fathers, friends and neighbors are suffering. We need to work even harder to help build a community of healthy hearts. A new Heart & Vascular Institute will provide the region with comprehensive and personalized care, access to prevention, education and screenings, clinical research and trials, as well as the highest level of technology for diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular-related issues. According to Dr. Victor Schmelzer, the Medical Director of Cardiac Surgery and Interim Medical Director of the Heart and Vascular Institute, “Our program will be unique, as it will be a fully-integrated, working model built around the needs of our patients. It means we are focused on providing our patients the care they deserve. They will get the right treatment, by the right doctors, at the right time, for the right reasons.”  Construction is well underway, and the Institute is scheduled to open in 2014. With the construction of a new Heart & Vascular Institute, St. Elizabeth Healthcare has pledged to work with the community to reduce heart-related deaths in the Northern Kentucky region by 25 percent within the Institute’s first 10 years — by the end of 2025. While this is the Institute’s goal, the Foundation’s goal is to work with our community to help make the Heart & Vascular Institute a reality.

Through the generosity of our donors, the Foundation has committed to fundraising for half of the $30 million needed to build the Institute — thereby ensuring St. Elizabeth can continue to provide the high level of care our community deserves. But we can’t do it without you! We need your help to save lives and reach these goals. Here are a few of the many ways you can help:

The Foundation's campaign for the Heart and Vascular Institute is being chaired by Bill Holocher — a man who understands the community need, first-hand. Here’s Bill’s story:

Bill Holocher, an exceptionally fit, 59-year-old insurance executive, has always been proactive about his health. After losing his father in a tragic car accident at six years old, Bill wants to ensure that he’s around for his own family — to continue planning his annual ski trip with his children, and be there for all of his family’s traditions.

But, as he found out a few years back, heart disease can sneak up on even the most healthy and active people.

The troubling results of a preventative screening led to further testing, which revealed five deadly blockages in the blood supply to his heart.

Bill says St. Elizabeth and its doctors saved his life.

The Heart & Vascular Institute was featured in the Winter 2014 issue of St. Elizabeth Healthcare's Healthy Neighbors magazine. Click here to read the article.
