All You Need to Know to Schedule a Mammogram

What is a mammogram?  
A mammogram is simply a low-dose X-ray of the breast.

What is a screening mammogram and who should have one?
Screening mammography is for those who have no symptoms or problems related to the breast. The goal is to find cancers before they start to cause symptoms, while they’re still in the earliest, most treatable stage. Women who are 40 and older should have screening mammograms every year, according to American Cancer Society guidelines.

Do you need a doctor's order for a screening mammogram?
No doctor’s prescription or order is needed for a screening mammogram. You can simply call St. Elizabeth Women's Wellness to schedule the test. The results will be provided to you and your doctor.

What is a diagnostic mammogram?
Your doctor may order a diagnostic mammogram if you’re having certain breast symptoms or if you’ve previously had an abnormal screening mammogram, or if your doctor has a specific concern. Diagnostic mammograms always require a doctor’s order and the results of this test are routinely known at the time of your visit.
