Screening Mammogram A screening mammogram is a routine exam that looks for changes in your breast from your previous mammogram. The goal is to find cancer in the earliest, most treatable stages. You don’t need a doctor’s referral, and you usually get your results in a few days. Diagnostic Mammogram If your screening mammogram identifies an abnormal area of breast tissue, your doctor will recommend a diagnostic mammogram to take a closer look. Your doctor may also use a diagnostic mammogram if you have a lump in your breast or symptoms such as thickening, nipple discharge or pain. A diagnostic mammogram requires a doctor’s referral. Results are available at the time of your exam. 3-D Mammogram At St. Elizabeth Healthcare, we also offer 3-D mammography — also known as tomosynthesis — a type of digital mammography. This technology uses X-rays and computer software, similar to a CT scan, to create a 3-D picture of your breast. Your doctor may recommend digital tomosynthesis if you have dense breast tissue or you’re at a greater risk of developing breast cancer due to your family history. This exam may not be covered by insurance, so check with your insurance provider about your coverage. Schedule an Appointment A mammogram only takes 10 minutes, but it could save your life.
