What to expect if you’re having joint replacement surgery

At the Total Joint Center, you’ll find a program coordinator to help ensure you have everything you need during your stay. The program coordinator is here to answer any questions you have and acts as a liaison between you and your family and our physicians and staff. Together, the coordinator, nurse manager and assistant nurse manager work closely to provide you the best possible care.

  • Before your surgery: Beginning at your first doctor’s appointment, your surgeon is there to answer your questions and ensure that you feel comfortable. That means providing you with all the information you need to make an informed decision about joint replacement surgery. Your second visit is a follow-up session where you can ask any questions you still may have.

  • Having surgery: Some replacement procedures can be done using minimally invasive techniques, which require less of an incision, less pain and a quicker recovery. Following your surgery, you can expect to have some pain, however pain medications and physical therapy will reduce your pain in the weeks following surgery.

  • Your recovery: Your rehabilitation will begin in the hospital, and possibly the day of your surgery. Your therapist will help you work out a schedule for exercise, rest and medication to help make your recovery process go smoothly. Others who have had joint replacement surgery report greatly reduced pain and a return to a lifestyle that they thought was gone forever.
