When it’s time to downsize, decision-making can be difficult.
“For the vast majority of individuals, downsizing is a very emotional and hard thing to do,” said Jenelen Dulemba, director of PrimeWise ” St. Elizabeth Healthcare’s free membership program for older adults. “It’s tough to leave a place to which you have so many emotional attachments. Some people come to a juncture where they realize the situation isn’t working for them anymore, but many others just don’t and aren’t able to come to that realization from an emotional standpoint. Sometimes, it’s just physically overwhelming.”
One of the ways family members inadvertently make downsizing harder for their aging loved ones is when they don’t want to take their sentimental possessions.
“They truly want these items that mean so much to them to go to family members, and so many children and grandchildren aren’t interested in them,” Dulemba said. “That’s the hardest thing for them, that something that means so much to them isn’t embraced by their family members.”
