Healthy Headlines readers, we have some extremely exciting news! We are partnering with the Kenton County Public Library to beat summer boredom and keep kids reading all summer long.
According to Reading is Fundamental, research shows that children who don’t read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect. To encourage a reading routine, Healthy Headlines is launching a Beat the Boredom Summer Reading Program.
The Kenton County Public Library provided a summer reading list with books that promote healthy living for younger-elementary children. Families can download the list here and visit their Kenton County branch to find these titles (and many more). There will also be fun activities and crafts featured throughout the summer.
Starting Thursday, June 30 (through August 25) Healthy Headlines Facebook fans will be able to enter a weekly contest to win a library bag full of swag and books from Kenton County Public Library’s reading list.
Meanwhile, we’ll be posting stories over the next couple of weeks on topics like the “summer slide” and how to prevent it, the importance of reading to infants and toddlers, and how to prepare children to read before they enter kindergarten. Parents can get information from local experts on a variety of health topics all summer long and sign up for daily or weekly newsletters.
Children (ages 2-12) can also participate in Kenton County Public Library’s 2016 Summer Reading Program that runs through August 31.
