The connection between testosterone and male sexual health is broadly known. Healthy testosterone levels usually translate to good health, while low testosterone levels can cause erectile dysfunction and a diminished libido.
But low testosterone levels can negatively impact a man’s health and quality of life in other ways, as well. If you lack energy or muscle strength, a low testosterone level could be the culprit. It could also be behind psychological conditions like depression.
Ignoring the signs of low testosterone levels could have serious consequences. In addition to the continued intensification of the symptoms already mentioned, men with low testosterone are at increased risk of cardiovascular events and osteoporosis, said Dr. Noah Allen, a urologist with St. Elizabeth Healthcare.
“Men should see their doctor if they are experiencing any of the above symptoms, as low testosterone could be due to a variety of reasons,” Allen said.
For men under 50, a drop in testosterone could be caused by illnesses, viral infections, genetic conditions and some types of cancer.
Illnesses and conditions that could cause lowered testosterone levels include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, diseases of the lungs, kidneys or liver, and pituitary gland problems. Klinefelter, Kallmann and Prader-Willi syndromes are some of the more serious genetic conditions that could cause low testosterone. It should suffice to say that signs of low testosterone should be taken seriously.
Low testosterone is often treatable “” sometimes without the use of pharmaceuticals. Weight loss, increased exercise and healthier diets can positively impact a man’s testosterone levels.
For more serious conditions, testosterone replacement therapy may be necessary. Testosterone replacements are available in many forms, and can be used to treat conditions that have the greatest adverse effect on testosterone production. However, they should always be prescribed by and used under the supervision of a doctor, such as a urologist or endocrinologist.
Regardless of the severity of symptoms, seeing a doctor about low testosterone is always advised. Ruling out the more serious causes and getting on a treatment regiment can improve a man’s health, well-being, and quality of life.
