Learn why da Vinci Surgery may be your best treatment option
The da Vinci Surgical System consists of an ergonomically designed console where the surgeon sits, a mobile patient-side cart with four interactive robotic arms, a high-resolution 3-D vision system, and proprietary wristed instrumentation. The system is designed to seamlessly translate the surgeon’s hand movements into corresponding micro-movements of the miniaturized instruments inside the patient. Your doctor controls the da Vinci System, which translates his or her hand movements into smaller, more precise movements of tiny instruments inside your body. Though it is often called a “robot,” da Vinci cannot act on its own: Instead, the surgery is performed entirely by your doctor.
Together, da Vinci technology allows your doctor to perform complex procedures through just a few tiny openings. As a result, you may be able to get back to life faster without the usual recovery following major surgery. The da Vinci System has been used successfully worldwide in hundreds of thousands of procedures to date.
Today, complex conditions ranging from cancer to uterine prolapse, fibroids and even heart disease can be treated minimally invasively with da Vinci® Surgery. This approach uses a robotic surgical system that provides your surgeon better vision, more precision and control. It requires only a few small incisions, so you can get back to your life faster – without the usual recovery following major surgery.
For the patient, benefits may include:
- Significantly less pain
- Less blood loss
- Less scarring
- Shorter recovery time
- A faster return to normal daily activities
- And in many cases, better clinical outcomes
As with any surgery, these benefits cannot be guaranteed, as surgery is unique to each patient and procedure. The da Vinci Surgical System® is considered safe and effective, but may not be appropriate for everyone. Always ask your doctor about all treatment options, as well as the benefits and risks.
At St. Elizabeth Healthcare, we currently use the da Vinci Surgical System for performing prostate surgery, partial nephrectomies, nephroureterectomy, and hysterectomies (benign and oncology).
Gynecologic Oncology and Urology patients will be among the first to undergo da Vinci Surgery.
