Edgewood, KY—
The ancient sport of Chinese dragon boat racing will return to Northern Kentucky. The fifth annual Kentucky Dragon Boat Festival, “Paddling for the Pink,” will occur on Saturday, September 6 at A.J. Jolly Park in Campbell County. Join The Kentucky Thorough-Breasts, Kentucky’s first breast cancer survivor dragon boat racing team and presenting sponsor St. Elizabeth Healthcare in the fight against breast cancer.

Proceeds from “Paddling for the Pink” benefit the Breast Centers of St. Elizabeth Healthcare and the ongoing mission of the Kentucky Thorough-Breasts, all of which are committed to women’s health and breast cancer awareness.

Dragon boat racing has its roots in ancient China. In the last 25 years, it has been revitalized and its popularity continues to grow. It is one of the fastest growing team sports in the world. There are more than 50 million people worldwide participating in dragon boat racing each year. Teams and competitions are currently held in more than 57 nations.

Form a team and you can join the races. Teams consist of 18 – 20 paddlers and five alternates. All teams must have at least eight women. No all-male teams will be permitted. A steerperson, drummer, paddles, life jackets and dragon boats will be provided. Persons ages 14 and older can participate. No prior racing experience is required. Teams can come from co-workers, friends, spouses, church members, civic leaders, customers, neighbors and others to fill your winning team.

Each team is welcome to raise additional money for the event. Prizes will be awarded to the teams that raise the most money. You do not have to participate in the races to join in on the fun. The event will feature food vendors and live music throughout the day. Team check in begins at 7 a.m. with races starting at 8:15 a.m. An awards ceremony will be held at approximately 3 p.m.

New this year is a 2K race at the end of the day. All registered paddlers are welcome to participate at no additional charge. Paddlers will get the chance to experience the fun of racing up to ten other boats around A.J. Jolly Lake.
