News Room: Nurses Honored with Team Daisy Award

The Barnes family created the Daisy Award10 years ago after their loved one, Patrick Barnes, was in and out of the hospital with idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura. After his death, the family created the Daisy Foundation to recognize nurses for extraordinary care and “honor the super-human work nurses do for patients and families daily.”

St. Elizabeth Ft. Thomas Critical Care nurses received the second ever Team Daisy Award for care given to a long-term patient and family. This patient was very complex with multisystem organ failure and diverse family dynamics. The staff overcame all adversity and assisted one another in physical, legal and emotional matters involving this patient and family. They provided outstanding nursing care that prevented the patient from getting pneumonia and having skin breakdown until many months into his stay. The nurses’ excellent care provided this patient a nearly pain-free stay throughout his 370-day hospitalization. Physicians and others said that it was the exemplary nursing care that sustained this patient through months of decline in his health.

Staff learned new ways to collaborate with social workers, physicians and the legal system to benefit the patient. Because of this experience, a new camaraderie and respect evolved within the multidisciplinary team. All involved, grew personally and professionally in a way that will stay with them as they continue to provide true compassion and nursing expertise to the patients entrusted in their care.
