Women and medical care providers will learn more about ovarian cancer beginning in September in an effort to improve outcomes, thanks to a Greater Cincinnati Foundation grant to St. Elizabeth Women’s Wellness.

The foundation provided $16,000 to St. Elizabeth to start the ovarian cancer awareness fund, St. Elizabeth Healthcare spokesman Guy Karrick said this morning.

Primary care providers and family practitioners will be coached on proper evaluation and management of women at risk for ovarian cancer.

The widespread educational initiative will touch more than 40,000 women in the next three years, according to St. Elizabeth. In addition, women at the highest risk for ovarian cancer will undergo enhanced evaluation through the Women’s Wellness Breast Centers.

"We hope to make more women and providers aware of the means for early identification of ovarian cancer and the best ways to treat our patients for optimal outcomes" Dr. Jack Basil of Tristate Gynecologic Oncology said in a statement.

The St. Elizabeth Ovarian Cancer Awareness Initiative will begin in September in conjunction with Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and will continue for three years. The St. Elizabeth Healthcare Foundation is accepting donations. For more information, call the foundation at 859-301-3920.
