St. Elizabeth Healthcare has been awarded a $35,000 one-year grant from the Avon Breast Health Outreach Program to increase awareness of the life-saving benefits of early detection of breast cancer.

This is the seventh year that the Avon Foundation has given St. Elizabeth this grant for its work on breast cancer and excellence in this field.

The money will go to the Appalachian Help, Outreach, Prevention and Education (A HOPE) at St. Elizabeth. The program provides professional staff to educate women, especially poor and medically under-served women, in Northern Kentucky. It also brings low-cost or free mammogram exams to these women.

Women with abnormal mammogram or breast exam results are offered assistance for follow-up services.

The A HOPE program has educated almost 10,000 women about the importance of early detection and referred almost 4,000 women for mammograms and clinical breast exams since 2007.

St. Elizabeth Healthcare in 2012 diagnosed more than 275 Northern Kentucky women with breast cancer, which is the leading form of cancer for women the the United States. Nationally, there is a new diagnosis every three minutes and a death from breast cancer every 14 minutes, according to the Avon Foundation.

“We are proud that the Avon Foundation shares our mission and has chosen to support our program,” said Phyllis Reed, A HOPE coordinator, in a release. “In Northern Kentucky, whether in the inner city, suburbs or outlying rural counties, there is never a reason for a woman not to have a mammogram. The funding allows us to get the word out.”
